Suggestion, Tips, and Techniques for a Smooth Interview
Many people often have to interview someone at some time for some reason. Some need to interview a Subject Matter Expert to gain insight on an unfamiliar topic. Some need to interview a potential employee for a new role at a company. And, even some interview others as a reporter, to learn more about a story and gain intel.
Regardless, interviewing can be challenging and even cause anxiety if it’s not prepared well.
“Interviewing is a learned skill and takes many years to perfect, and most of us are still mastering the art. It’s also a matter of style and how you come across in general. Are you pushy and stand offish or an empathetic listener? People pick up on these vibes.”
To make a successful interview, there are several recommended tips that I would suggest.
- In active listening, the interviewer’s opinion isn’t shared, rather the opinion shared is only from the interviewee.
- Interrupting the individual with one’s own opinions almost invalidates their view, as the goal is to get to know them.
- Clarifying their statements makes sure that information isn’t misinterpreted or misread.
- Summarizing as well makes sure that the interviewee’s answers are restated correctly and again, leaves no room for misunderstanding.
- At the conclusion of the conversation, the interviewer needs to appropriately paraphrase the other individual’s statements, worries, and thoughts.
- To be ready for all of this, taking notes and seeking clarification is a priority for a successful interview.
